Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
This quote relates to my role as a leader because it sums up few of my characteristics that I attribute to my role as a leader. For example, I am a strong believer that if people want to make a change, or if they want to help individuals then they will put in the effort to make this happen. As a leader I know that if I want to see change I have to be the one to take initiative because if I do not no one else will. I also relate this quote to me as a leader because MLK states that “justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle.” What I take out of that is that as a leader I can use the struggles that I have encountered in my life, and use those struggles to relate to others, and hopefully inspire them to hang on when times are rough.
When I think of social justice I think of a society in which individuals are striving for the equality and value of every human being. In today’s society we have issues such as hunger, homelessness, unequal education opportunities, etc. Individuals who strive for social justice put forth the effort to build institutions, organizations, and other structures that assist the less fortunate individuals. One such structure that promotes social justice is community service. Through community service individuals are giving their time to make a difference in an individual’s life.
I enjoyed the servant leadership presentation. The presenter was really engaging, and I found myself learning a lot. Before Friday I had no idea what a servant leader is. When we did the servant leader characteristic activity I discovered that I already possessed some of these qualities. The characters that I have are empathy, listening, and the commitment to the growth of people. Generally, I am a person that sympathizes with others and tries to understand where people are coming from. With that said there are some characteristics that I want to obtain, and they include awareness and conceptualization.  I know that these are some qualities were I can improve. For example I want to be more aware of issues in the world. Sometimes I get so caught up in my little bubble that I forget there is a lively world around me. I also want to be able to live beyond just today. I want to be able to figure out in what direction I want my life, and from there I want to come up with life goals.
(imagine=conceptualization)
As of right now I cannot say what my dream job is because I do not know. Originally, I thought it was a pediatrician, but that is not the case anymore. Recently I have thought physician assistant or a psychologist. Those are just thoughts though, nothing is set in stone. I do know that I would love to have a job where I can travel a lot, and of course while making a positive impact on the lives of others.
This song reminds me of the concept of social justice.
